Ofni Buzz

More Buzz fun, this time for Cotton Wolf, a duo from my hometown. I should do more local music on here... or take the Cardiff bit out of my bio really. Anyway I did do a Buzz review for September's issue too but thought it was so gash I didn't share here (the music and the review - it was Frankie Cosmos by the way). Utter balls.

But back to this month's review...

COTTON WOLF
Ofni (Bubblewrap Collective)
****

Cardiff duo Cotton Wolf follow up their Welsh Music Prize debut Life in Analogue with Ofni or “Fear” yn Gymraeg. It’s an apt title for an album of pensive, precision electronic music. While mostly instrumental, the standout track is the title track, with Adwaith’s Hollie Singer adding sweet vocals to Cotton Wolf’s dark, driven sound.

The glacial Winter Fields is also worth seeking out. A solid sophomore that should also make the WMP shortlist. File next to Moderat and Rival Consoles. SE

And it turns out S4C used Ofni for the Azerbaijan and Belarus games. Lovely stuff.

Ofni is out October 4th 2019 and you can pre-order a red vinyl version limited to 100 copies now if that's your bag.

Radio 1 Residency Goes On and On

As we slide into autumn it's time for another reshuffle of the Radio 1 Residency roster. Yet as a little Brucey bonus during the transition we got a whole two hours from a previous Resident and my personal fave, The Black Madonna.

Throwing down plenty of sublime disco music the highlight was the funky chug of On and On by Mach.

This track was apparently the inspiration for the first Chicago House track, also called On and On by Jesse Anderson... but that's definitely the cowbell from Funky Town, right?

Ins and Outs of Radio 1 Residency Autumn/Winter 2019

On previous occasions, there's been a complete overall of the eight DJs that make up the Residency roster. This time around, however, half the DJs survived the cut.

And I'm pretty happy that two that did are the peerless Paul Woolford and the pounding techno of Charlotte de Witte. Here's the full rundown...

Ins

  • Denis Sulta
  • Nastia
  • Saoirse
  • Sherelle

Outs

  • Danny Byrd
  • Honey Dijon
  • Marcel Dettmann
  • Monki

Remainers

  • Charlotte de Witte
  • HAAi
  • Jayda G
  • Paul Woolford aka Special Request
So the next six months are shaping up pretty nicely I reckon. You can check the full bios of the new and returning DJs over on the BBC now.
