Top 10 Things I Heard in 2019

Yes mate, here's my top 10 things I heard in 2019. Just like in all the other editions of my end-of-year list, it ain't all new releases. Instead, it's things I heard for the first time in 2019, no matter when they were released. And even that is nonsense, as I definitely heard one of these tracks before 2019, it just took on greater significance this year.

So in no particular order, so here we go...

1. Metronomy at Bristol 02 Academy, in particular, the duelling synths during Lying Low

2. Pretty much everything off Igor by Tyler, the Creator

3. Aphex Twin - Rhubarb orc. 19.53 rev [unrev mono edit]

4. The Beta Band - Dry The Rain

5. Blanck Mass' latest album Animated Violence Mild (and his Clwb Ifor Bach show was tidy too)

6. Virna Lindt - Intelligence

7. Spacemen 3 - Amen

8. Shanti Celeste - Aqua Block

9. TNGHT - II
Can't decide between DOLLAZ and Gimme Summn, but as they're off the same EP, I might as well whack it all in.

10. Dire, Dire Docks from Super Mario 64, as featured in Teki Latex's Boiler Room mix

Powder Dry Boxing Day

So, how was your Christmas? I hope it was better than mine.

Turns out that my highlight came on Boxing Day. Nope, not at 6am in Children's A&E but at 9pm on YouTube. That's when Aphex Twin uploaded his set from this summer at Manchester's Warehouse Project.

Lovely stuff. I'm still working my way through it TBH, but the first thing that really grabbed my ear was this nostalgic rave rumbler from Overmono:

Yes, mate. Powder Dry closes Overmono's Arla II EP, which came out on XL back in 2017. There's also a track called Telephax 030 on there, so all the 👍👍👍.

10 in 1

X in 1 = a slimmed-down run-down of some of the things I've been enjoying recently.

TNGHT - Gimme Summn

Like some nightmare Sonic/2001 shit. Inject it in my face. DOLLAZ bangs too. Man, everything Hudson Mohawke and Lunice do together absolutely bangs.

Harlem - Gay Human Bones

As featured on the excellent series 2 of The End of The F***ing World. Sure I saw somewhere it was the most streamed show on All 4.

Jimmy Edgar - I Wanna Be Your STD

Like the Harlem track, this is from a scary number of years ago (Where did the 2000s go nevermind the 2010s?). I Wanna Be Your STD is some glorious glitchy phuture r'n'b from 2004. Was reminded of this lowkey banger on the Radio 1's Chill Mix but def worth sharing for the fan-made video.

Swizz Beatz ft. Nas - Echo

"Throwin' piss out the window at police." Every damn time Nas comes in with that opener, I crack up. That Nas is a good rapper.

ITEM - A Quatre

Brooding electronica from a French producer (or producers) on Hong Kong label, NLS Records. A Quatre is on Project AØA ver.4, which "is an inception for various artists per sa Audio øn Audio, reason is simplicity with the connecting algorithmic system to create hardware or software to accompany the sound made by producer to fill in that unique void in NLS(online system.)"

Sure thing buddy.

Calibre - Five Minute Flame

Super pretty ambient piano from an old junglist... well liquid drum'n'bass guy. Beautiful stuff.

Barker - Utility

Some of that beatless techno the kids all love. All the kids. Love it they do. No kicks, sheer madness. Kids eh?

FOOOL - We The Punks (Desert Sound Colony Remix)

Big mid-00s vibes. Very Soulwax. Very Erol Alkan. Very good. Features in Anthony Naples' Boiler Room set from the other day.

SPARKLING - I Want to See Everything

Kinda like a German Phoenix... anybody? Sunshine pop for a gloomy winter.

GHUM - Saturn

Well goth, well post-punk. TBF if something sounds a bit like Siouxsie there's a good chance I'll post it.

Boards of Chinook

I've been diving into Aphex Twin rarities mixes on YouTube over the past year, so it was inevitable I'd slide over to Boards of Canada eventually...

So to Boards of Canada - Rare Releases Mixtape, as compiled by Lilly's Domain. There's a lot of real interesting stuff here and the pick of the bunch is the spooky, slightly acid, Autechre-like workout of Chinook:

This version of Chinook is on the b-side of Aquarius, a limited release (like 500 7"s) that was the only single from Music Has the Right to Children. A shorter edit appeared on the even more limited release Boc Maxima (like 50 cassettes). So pretty rare, but pretty good.

Lustwerk Buzz

I'm back on my Buzz nonsense. This month it's Galcher Lustwerk's latest Information, which came out yesterday (Friday 22nd November 2019)...

GALCHER LUSTWERK
Information (Ghostly International)
***

Galcher Lustwerk is the latest electronic maverick to find a home on the fine Ghostly International label. And on his third album (and first for Ghostly), the New York via Cleveland producer is in full late-night hip-house mode. In less skilled hands Information’s stream of conscious half-rap vocals and ever-so-tasteful beats to study/relax to, could drift into plodding lo-fi house. Yet there are enough ideas, oddball lyrics, and technique on show here to lift this to somewhere pretty good. SE

I See A Dime is my highlight...

Slo Bird Whistle

150 gsm. 10 x 12". £120. As much as I'd love to have it the WXAXRXP Box Set was always going to be a little out of my league.

The WXAXRXP Sessions series features 10 selected radio sessions to celebrate 30 years of Warp Records. You can even buy individual sessions if you like.

But as a skinflint and non-vinyl guy, I was delighted to learn that there is also a 10-track taster - WXAXRXP Sessions Sampler - available digitally.

And of course, there's some rare AF Aphex Twin on it.

Slo Bird Whistle was recorded for John Peel's show in 1995. It did appear during the great SoundCloud dump of 2015, as 11 Slo Bird Whistle[peel Sesh] by user18081971, but this is the first time you can get it well hi-fi like.

Anyway, the WXAXRXP Sessions box set came out on Friday (15th November 2019) as did the WXAXRXP Sessions Sampler. Tracklist for the latter is below...

1. Aphex Twin - Slo Bird Whistle (Peel Session)
2. Bibio - Lovers Carvings (WXAXRXP Session)
3. Boards of Canada - XYZ (Peel Session)
4. Flying Lotus - Golden Axe (Maida Vale Session)
5. Kelly Moran - In Parallel (acoustic) (WXAXRXP Session)
6. LFO - Take Control (Peel Session)
7. Mount Kimbie - You Look Certain (I'm Not So Sure) (feat. Andrea Balency) (WXAXRXP Session)
8. Oneohtrix Point Never - Toys 2 (KCRW Session)
9. Plaid - Elide (Peel Session)
10. Seefeel - Vex (Peel Session)

Ghost In The Synth

TNGHT closed their recent Essential Mix with Hudson Mohawke's remix of Pretty Boy by Wuh Oh. While I'm usually all about a HudMo remix, in this rare instance I prefer the cleaner, more graceful original.

Well lush like. Plus, anything that references Ghost In The Shell and Neon Genesis Evangelion is A-OK with me. I don't know a lot about Wuh Oh, but it appears he's from Glasgow like your boy HudMo, so there's that.

Anyway, TNGHT's Essential Mix is still on BBC Sounds for a few more days as I write this, or y'know head to MixCloud or SoundCloud where it's bound to have been re-uploaded a few times.

Bluetoothed Bangerz

All change in the Celica game. Make no mistake, she's still around and the chariot still tears it up on the way to Cornwall (big love as always to the M49).

No, the big change is when it comes to music in the car. Instead of relying on CDs I got one of those Bluetooth FM transmitters to connect my phone to the car radio. It's been an absolute game-changer.

So for Frank's first trip down, I downloaded a load of shows and mixes on the BBC Sounds app for the extended ride (big love as always to Cornwall Services near Roche).

Two key tracks stood out. Cornwall-bound it was Aqua Block by Shanti Celeste, who was a guest on Saoirse's Radio 1 Residency. I can't find it online, but Aqua Block will appear on Celeste's debut album Tangerine, due out on November 15th. Skip to 46:30 on BBC Sounds to hear the bouncy, playful techno of Aqua Block ahead of then.

EDIT: It's now on that YouTube...

On the way back it was Spaceland by Hanna, as played by Benji B. Proper spacey broken beats vibes with electric slap bass, you can hear a preview of it over on Rush Hour Music's SoundCloud.

Pick up Hanna's Spaceland on Patchwork, Rush Hour's latest artist compilation from Sassy J, which is out next month.

However, the big question here is where does this leave my CD collection? I'm approaching this about 5-10 years after most, but now I can stream in the Celica, and there's an Echo Dot in the kitchen (big love as always to Kisstory), I'm running out of places for the CD to rule. So, is it time I wean myself of physical media? Not when I can pick up The Simpsons Sing The Blues for 50p in Barnardo's Falmouth, it's not.

Say it out loud it'll be okay.

It's been emotional.

This past couple of weeks I've been all over the shop. I upped and left a job I thought I'd love. Then my mum was diagnosed with cancer. I lived in my dressing gown for days and escaped to West Baltimore with The Wire.

I also listened to The Three EPs by The Beta Band, which I picked up in a charity shop in Penarth last month.

You know where I'm going with this. Dry The Rain, so good it became a joke in High Fidelity.

Say it out loud it'll be okay.

Mum had the operation, got the all-clear.

Say it out loud it'll be okay.

I start a new job next month.

Say it out loud it'll be okay.

Idles vs Metronomy

Idles remix Metronomy and sound like 2007...

Like this is the most mid-2000s electro-indie-disco thing I've heard since I dug out the burned CDs I used to do Sam's Sonic Sandwich with on Radiowave.

I am not complaining.

Metronomy - Wedding Bells (IDLES 'Til Dev do us Party Remix) appears on Metronomy Forever Remixes, which appears to be an ongoing playlist rather than an EP or album as such.

Aphex Twin Lesson

How do you pick a highlight from Aphex Twin's set at Printworks last month?

Part history lesson DJ set, part hardware throwdown live set, all smothered with Weirdcore's sublime glitch visuals, it's an absolute treat.

From hardcore rave bangers to Whitney Houston vocals, noise jams and Stone in Focus, Aphex offered a schooling in electronic music. Not much more to say apart from enjoy and check the tracklist under the video.

Ofni Buzz

More Buzz fun, this time for Cotton Wolf, a duo from my hometown. I should do more local music on here... or take the Cardiff bit out of my bio really. Anyway I did do a Buzz review for September's issue too but thought it was so gash I didn't share here (the music and the review - it was Frankie Cosmos by the way). Utter balls.

But back to this month's review...

===

COTTON WOLF
Ofni (Bubblewrap Collective)
****

Cardiff duo Cotton Wolf follow up their Welsh Music Prize debut Life in Analogue with Ofni or “Fear” yn Gymraeg. It’s an apt title for an album of pensive, precision electronic music. While mostly instrumental, the standout track is the title track, with Adwaith’s Hollie Singer adding sweet vocals to Cotton Wolf’s dark, driven sound.

The glacial Winter Fields is also worth seeking out. A solid sophomore that should also make the WMP shortlist. File next to Moderat and Rival Consoles. SE

===

And it turns out S4C used Ofni for the Azerbaijan and Belarus games. Lovely stuff.

Ofni is out October 4th 2019 and you can pre-order a red vinyl version limited to 100 copies now if that's your bag.

Radio 1 Residency Goes On and On

As we slide into autumn it's time for another reshuffle of the Radio 1 Residency roster. Yet as a little Brucey bonus during the transition we got a whole two hours from a previous Resident and my personal fave, The Black Madonna.

Throwing down plenty of sublime disco music the highlight was the funky chug of On and On by Mach.

This track was apparently the inspiration for the first Chicago House track, also called On and On by Jesse Anderson... but that's definitely the cowbell from Funky Town, right?

Ins and Outs of Radio 1 Residency Autumn/Winter 2019

On previous occasions, there's been a complete overall of the eight DJs that make up the Residency roster. This time around, however, half the DJs survived the cut.

And I'm pretty happy that two that did are the peerless Paul Woolford and the pounding techno of Charlotte de Witte. Here's the full rundown...

Ins

  • Denis Sulta
  • Nastia
  • Saoirse
  • Sherelle

Outs

  • Danny Byrd
  • Honey Dijon
  • Marcel Dettmann
  • Monki

Remainers

  • Charlotte de Witte
  • HAAi
  • Jayda G
  • Paul Woolford aka Special Request
So the next six months are shaping up pretty nicely I reckon. You can check the full bios of the new and returning DJs over on the BBC now.

Where's Your Numan At?

Right, so Plus One Loo is ripping through Mindhunter season 2 on Netflix and this killer track comes on. It's clearly where Basement Jaxx knicked the huge riff from for Where's Your Head At? (which still bangs by the way), and it turns out it is only yer man Gary Numan.

How the flip has it taken me nearly 18 years to hear M.E. by Gary Numan is beyond me.

Yeah RA.687 is somehow the later.

Everybody in the Place

You've got two weeks as I write this to catch a top top doc on iPlayer. I'm talking about Everybody in the Place: an Incomplete History of Britain 1984-1992. It's nominally about the explosion of rave culture but explores so much more.

Not only is it top top content but it's also presented in a really interesting way. Instead of voiceovers, talking heads, and archive footage like a lot of music documentaries, Everbody in the Place takes a different route. It uses a format of a talk to a class of sixth form students, who ask questions and interact with Roland 909s. It may sound wanky but it works and charmingly so.

While there are many highlights, and I heartily recommend you catch it on the BBC iPlayer before September, I'd just like to share this...

Body popping to Numbers by Kraftwerk on US TV. Love it. Absolutely love it.

More Selected Ambient Works

I've been on another big Aphex Twin binge. Maybe it's the nostalgia that's stirred by a birthday.

But rather than picking an album I've been going threw the fan-made mixes on YouTube of the SoundCloud dump. I've written previously on how I felt the 20+ hours of music that Richard D. James posted anonymously in 2015 was a bit daunting. Yet sonic explorers braver than I continue to sort and stitch together albums and mixes from this trove.

Before I come on to this week's listening though and my particular highlight, I'd like give thanks to Naked Flames for their Aphex Twin - Sleep Mix. Mainly made up of Selected Ambient Works Volume II, this exquisite music helped immensely during the long nights in the hospital around Frank's birth. I continue to return to it when I need to create some headspace.

While this Sleep Mix has been blocked on YouTube others featuring Autechre, Boards of Canada, and Oneohtrix Point Never are still available on Naked Flames' channel. Plus there's been a reupload of the Aphex Twin version to SoundCloud.

OK back to this week, so I've been headphones on and enjoying:

Aphex Twin - Selected Ambient Works Vol. 3 (2015) - user48736353001 compilation

Aphex Twin - Selected 2017 Works

Aphex Twin - Selected Ambient Works Vol. 4 (2015) - user48736353001 compilation pt2

Aphex Twin - Selected Ambient Works 1.5

And as these mixes (with the exception of Selected 2017 Works) are made up of the user48736353001 and user18081971 SoundCloud dumps, they're very unlikely to be pulled for copyright infringement any time soon.

Rhubarb orc. 19.53 rev [unrev mono edit]

Finally, it's within that last mix that I found my particular highlight of the week. Well kinda. It's "Rhubarb Orchestral". Yet as Dommoson states on the accompanying Reddit thread the hard panning of the bass takes you away from the beauty of this orchestral version of Untitled 3 (Rhubarb) from SAWII.

But yet again those more dedicated than me have come up with the goods. Here's Aphex Twin - rhubarb orc. 19.53 rev [unrev mono edit] which sorts out the panning issue...

And lastly, I promise, here's a fun photo from Falmouth that was posted recently on Reddit...

List time again lads...

Steve Lacy - Guide

Despite giving one of the dullest interviews I've ever heard on Benji B's show a few weeks back, this is mighty fine...

James T. Cotton - Infoline (DMX Krew Remix)

Spacey acid stuff yeah.

Floating Points - Coorabell

B-side to LesAlpx, more driving heady techno mate.

Lone - Sea Of Tranquility

Did you know that this month marks the 50th anniversary of man going to the Moon? Did you?

Radioactive Man - Goodnight Morton

Stunning ambient work from your man Keith Tenniswood...

Cerrone - Love In C Minor

Filthy disco from the French don, as sampled by The Avalanches...

Lizzo - Tempo (feat. Missy Elliott)

Never change Missy, never change...

Bill Withers - Harlem

Stone cold, stone cold...

Blanck Mass Buzz

This month I had the pleasure of reviewing Blanck Mass's latest for Buzz Magazine...

BLANCK MASS
Animated Violence Mild (Sacred Bones)
****

Blanck Mass by name Blanck Mass by nature. Album number four from Benjamin John Power, one half of Fuck Buttons, is big, bombastic, and bizarre. Swaying between sounding like the soundtrack to a Chilean wonderkid’s goals and tricks YouTube compilation (House Vs. House), fight music on a MMORPG (Love Is a Parasite), and the kind of stuff that pumps out of a Cyberdog stall at Download (Death Drop), Animated Violence Mild is utterly bonkers. Fun though if Screamo-EDM-Goth-Trance is your bag. SE

Blanck Mass - Animated Violence Mild is out August 16th on Sacred Bones.

All 4 Amen

Plus One Loo decided to ditch Netflix a couple of months ago as we just weren't watching it. Don't worry we got it back in time for season three of Stranger Things. And they've got Neon Genesis Evangelion on there now, which is nice...

Anyway, during our Netflix-less days, I decided to go all-in on All 4 and I found some top stuff. None more so than my go-to Sunday morning chill TV that is Abandoned. Now stick with me, it's a show about a Canadian pro-skater called Rick McCrank who goes around weird abandoned places in North America. He talks to some local cranks and then has a... skateboard? Ride? Wheely time? I don't know what you call it.

I find it super relaxing and the cinematography is superb. Desolate malls, abandoned fishing villages, and poisoned lakes never looked so pretty.

The show's theme tune is Amen by Spacemen 3.

Get on it.

Pegging It

Yo, so this is a super quick post before it leaves the iPlayer. As I write, you've got till the early hours to watch episode one and then seven days to watch the second show of I Can Go For That: The Smooth World of Yacht Rock.

What's Yacht Rock? Well, it's a little contentious what gets thrown into this retrospective genre, none more so than Steely Dan with the below the line warriors on The Guardian. Best just to watch it while you can...

But if you're a little late then just enjoy Peg by Steely Dan and you'll be OK...

And I'm sure you know already but yep De La Soul leaned heavily on Peg for the brilliant Eye Know.

6 in 1 (Yet Again)

We've loving the list, I say we're loving the list...

Here's a few things I've been enjoying recently.

Trash Kit - Horizon

Highlife-flecked post-punk from a band with links to Electrelane. 100% approve. Bit gutted I missed out on reviewing the album for Buzz last month TBH.

J Majik - Hold You

Old skool jungalism in 2019. Yes yes yes.

LSDXOXO - Freakquency

More throwback vibes in this twisty house bumper from New York's LSDXOXO.

Kanye West feat. Rick Ross - Devil in a New Dress

He's insufferable but lord he's good.

Yellow Magic Orchestra - Firecracker

No way was this released in 1978 without the use of a wormhole.

Tyler, The Creator - Igor's Theme

Album of the year? Prolly. So many cuts so let's begin at the beginning.

Frank Vs Metronomy

So just under two weeks ago I became a dad. And the very first bit of music Frank heard was a snippet of Salted Caramel Ice Cream on the 'gram.

Bit of banger for a first song plus a bangin' video to boot.

And that was just the start of the mini Metronomy wave that Frank, Plus One Loo and me have been on since. The English Riviera happened to be in the Celica on the drive home from the hospital. We've been devouring their videos through the NOW TV stick. But perhaps biggest of all, Loo and I have tickets for Metronomy's Bristol show in November, which we've pencilled in as our first night out together. Metronomy Forever is blates on pre-order too.

Can't flipping wait.

BABii Buzz

Back on the Buzz train this month. Missed out on Trash Kit and Mort Garson albums but picked up the debut from BABii. Full review below, decided to repost here as I couldn't crowbar the last line into the magazine review...

BABii
HiiDE (Deathwaltz Originals)
***

HiiDE is the debut album of icy holographic electro pop from Margate’s BABii. And it kind of falls between two stools. Compared to the precision tooled synth pop of your Sigrids and your Robyns of this world, its lacking the killer hooks that worm their way into your head.

On the flipside it doesn’t quite have the sonic inventiveness of your Grimes and your FKA Twigs. What you’re left with is a pretty, sugary sweet, well-made pop album (dub don Adrian Sherwood produces here) that’s just unsure where to sit.

The “ii”s don’t have it. SE

Cold War Pop

Hands up, before this week I had no clue who Virna Lindt is, or Tot Taylor who produced this, nor The Compact Organisation, which is the label that ties all this together.

All I know is that Intelligence is glorious icy pop from Sweden. A kitsch mishmash of Cold War spy games, 60s film scores, and 80s new wave.

Shout out for the subtle flutter VCR effect on the YouTube video - it's the little things isn't it?

In fact the album Intelligence is from - 1983's Shiver - is well worth a listen.

And while it may be simplistic to draw a line from Lindt's shimmering sing-speak singing style to the work of fellow Scandinavians Annie and Sigrid, fans of the them, or sophisticated pop in general will find plenty to enjoy on Shiver. A curio from a fascinating time in music.

6 in 1 Again

Yet another list of what I've been enjoying lately... in a musical sense.

Metronomy - Lately

Metronomy are back and sound like Metronomy. Everything is right with the world.

oklou & Casey MQ - DAWN

The return of witch house? The vocal is Carly Rae Jepsen's Run Away From Me and other tracks on the For The Beasts EP use pop vocals from the likes from Miley Cyrus and Avril Lavigne. Gorilla vs Bear opened its Racquet May Spring 2019 Mix with it. Well spooks.

Arpanet - Wireless Internet

Colossal electro that I've unknowingly had in my collection for years (it was on Miss Kittin's Electroclash Mix CD for Muzik). However after noticing it on a recent Tom Trago NTS show it has popped up everywhere including on Betty's "cathartic bass" Science Heavy mix. Cathartic Bass. Fun fact, Arpanet is Gerald Donald, one half of Detroit Techno dons Drexciya.

Lack of Afro - No Guts No Glory

Another Brewhouse Banger. This caught the ear of both Owe and I during the post-squash isotonic ciders. However, after putting the album on in the office (theme of the day that day was hair), I learned that this moody little RJD2-style number is definitely his best output.

TWR72 - Tunnel

Basic AF big room techno. Sounds a bit like Vitalic. Have it.

Boots for Dancing - (Somewhere in The) South Pacific

It would be remiss of me not to have some knotty post-punk or something I've first heard played by Andrew Weatherall in a list like this... so here's a 2-4-1.

Chelmsford on a Saturday... Brown Shoes!

Gold Panda returned last month under the same of DJ Jenifa and dropped a free album over on Bandcamp. Well, it's pay what you like but he's stuck ***Please Enter 0 in the amount box for free download*** on the page, so that's fair game innit.

Jag Trax is a tidy house album that's slotted right into the Celica's rotation. It's proper good driving music now that spring has sprung.

And top billing goes to album-opener Dresscode...

With its refrains of "White shirt. Blue jeans. Brown shoes." and "Chelmsford on a Saturday" Dresscode is a Jeans And Sheux anthem for the ages. Pure fire for your chariot.
