Hellslinky

I'm off to Helsinki next month with work and I am of a mind to do a mix of Finnish music to mark the occasion.

I knew Panasonic/Pan Sonic were from Finland, as were the mighty freestyling Bomfunk MCs, but was a bit struggers after that. Good ol' Wiki came through though and I was ashamed to say that I did not know that Darude, he of the ubiquitous Sandstorm, hailed from this fine Nordic nation.

So with that knowledge and the fact that Jimi Tenor, Jori Hulkkonen, Husky Rescue (and Lordi) all come from this non-Scandinavian country, it should be an interesting listen if I get round to making it.

In the meantime here's Slugabed chopping up and slowing down Sandstorm by Darude...

You can get a free mp3 of it if you sign up to Slugabed's newsletter over on the Ninja Tune website.

Seven Psychotropic Sinewave Palindromes

Another day, another post based on FACT's top 25 albums of this quarter.

Following on from Bwana is Jake Meginsky, otherwise known as Vapor Gourd. Meginsky has released an album of pulsing, phasing, minimal electronic music on NNA Tapes. Yep, this is a cassette release people, and it's yours for the princely sum of $8. You can hear an excerpt below or stream the whole album over on Wire's site.

Now I just need to get round to sorting out my PayPal account...

Capsule's Pride & Tor

Turns out that Bwana album made up of Akira samples is a free download. Sold indeed...

Capsule's Pride is free if you can access the deep web. When I clicked on the link on Bwana's page on LuckyMe's site all I got was a BT page saying nah mate. I assumed it was busted until I saw a comment from someone on LuckyMe's Facebook page, saying "how the fuck do i deep web". I should have clocked the .onion domain as a pointer.

So I literally typed "deep web guide for noob" into Google. Anyway you basically need to download the Tor browser to access the deep web and this beginners guide to Tor nicely explains what it is, its background and how it works.

And if you can't be arsed to jump through those hoops, here's a link to a zip file of Capsule's Pride by Bwana. Well worth a download.

Baauer's Essential Mix

Yeah, so Baauer's Essential Mix is a bit fun.

So fun in fact that I even made a quick video on Flipagram. Shout out to Burning Red and their free workshop for giving me the kick up the backside and getting some apps and making videos and stuff.

The music used on the video is Hudson Mohawke's System.

This could well be the last Essential Mix I tape, as I used my only remaining C120 on it and a quick look on Amazon and eBay suggests they go for £10 a tape! Maybe I'll have some luck down Bessemer Road boot sale?

Kanedaaa!

A techno album/EP on LuckyMe based on samples from Akira?

Sold!

It's not just a gimmick though, Bwana has created something pretty damn special. It's made FACT's Top 25 albums from the first quarter of 2016 after all.

Smash Sumthin

Plus One Loo wants this mug...
She said I had to smash some old mugs to justify the purchase.

Well there's only one track to soundtrack such a task...
Adam F was on production duty for Redman's Smash Sumthin and also turned in a bit of a beast of a D'n'B remix of it. Talking of Adam F, recently Facebook's On This Day threw up this picture from two years ago.
I still haven't got around to converting and uploading his Breezeblock Mix from 2003. It kicks like a fackin' mule, believe me.

Dinosaur Sex

^^^WTF?^^^

Another day, another post based on something I heard on NTS.

Today it's Andrew Weatherall and a track he played about an hour into his latest Musics Not For Everyone show.

The track in question is Dinosaur Sex by Family Fodder, a nine-minute post-punk epic.

Now if you asked me before this week which Family Fodder track I'd post on Ceefax Of Life, I would have quickly replied "Debbie Harry, duh, from the bible that is the Rough Trade Shops - Post Punk 01 compilation, stupid question really..."
You know nothing, Sammyfax.

LK

I was working from home on Monday and was locked on to NTS, as Bonobo was on 2pm - 4pm.

In one of those happy coincidences Four Tet and Floating Points were on before Bonobo and they played Jorge Ben and Toquinho's Carolina Bela.

It's a wonderful summery tune that instantly sent me back to the early 2000s. Why not the the late 60s? One, I'm not that old you cheeky bastard. And two, Carolina Bela forms the backbone of DJ Marky and XRS's breakout D'n'B roller LK.

Gotta say that I got schooled that day as I didn't realise it was more of a remix than a sampling. And sorry Stamina MC, I know you think we like it, I like it, you like it too but I first encountered the original instrumental on Fabio's Radio 1 show and prefer it without you. Sorry Mr Stamina.

Nostálgico!

GWTF 19: Early Aphex

So Paul Woolford (AKA Special Request) uploaded some early Aphex Twin live sessions and it quickly did the rounds.

Now it's on here too, a good excuse to dust off ol' Go With The Flow, the sporadic series on Ceefax Of Life where I post stuff that's everywhere else but it's too good not to put on here just for the sake of being awkward.

Hopefully dug out of his mum's attic, the tape is 50 minutes of classic Aphex, noisy nose bleed techno and acid bookending some pretty ambient stuff in the middle. Made up of a Peel Session from 1992 and an Essential Selection live from Sheffield Hallam University in 1993, it's genuinely lovely to hear John Peel's voice again as he bumbles through a link and genuinely funny to hear Pete Tong big up Stereo MCs (and mention The M People).

Peel Session 1992 tracklist:

1. Afx 6
2. Illumineph
3. T Q T
4. Quintute
5. Blue Calx

That intro is bloody annoying though.

Hail, Caesar! It's The Future!

I wrote a quick review of the Coens' latest film Hail, Caesar! for theSprout. It can be summed up as "business as usual", if you can't be arsed clicking the link.

Anyway, I liked that the group doing the kidnapping were called The Future. So here's Prince doing a song called The Future.

Coincidentally it's on the soundtrack of another film, the original Batman (1989).

Deep, Deep, Down Inside Pablo

I've been listening to The Life of Pablo a lot recently. Strictly speaking I've been listening to the second half of The Life of Pablo a lot recently. I head straight to FML and go from there.

Fade closes the album on a house vibe, the main thrust provided by the bassline of Fingers Inc.'s Mystery of Love (Club Mix) but it's the vocal sample from Hardrive's Deep Inside that lodges... deep inside... my head.

Firestarter, Ancient Firestarter

20 years ago yesterday, The Prodigy released Firestarter, which means next Thursday 20 years ago I had my musical awakening.

I vividly remember watching Keith Flint flailing about and snarling at the camera in that old tunnel at Aldwych. As the number one it got played on Top of the Pops. And it got seared into my brain. It showed me that you didn't have to be like everyone else. That it was OK to be different. That it was OK to like weird stuff. It was a big moment for Sammyfax the kid.

But fuck me, 20 years ago?

Lindstrøm's MailTape

Finger on the pulse as ever, it's taken me 205 editions to discover the weird and wonderful world of MailTape.

The premise is nice, it's basically a curated playlist from a respected artist to soundtrack your Sunday morning, though obviously it's been my companion on the walks to work.

#205 was Lindstrøm and yep it's pretty cosmic disco-y. Lindstrøm's own production Rà-àkõ-st and Crackazat's Eye Light are the highlights but I'd just head to MailTape and let it wash over you.
