Daft Punk - Epilogue

My favourite band that I've never seen live.

And now I never will.

Inspiral Cardiff Sports Bar

Last month on Socially Distant Sports Bar, Elis James picked Cardiff City - The Movie, a short film by Johnny Owen for City's 2008 FA Cup Final appearance.

I remember watching it before the final, and it's an odd one for me, as it speaks to a slightly older football fan and one who supports a different team from what I do. Yet it still stirs something in me.

FYI I'm one of those armchair fans following a side 200 miles away. I always used to say I got my sporting disappointment from following Wales but that's gone out the window now.

Still, there's always good old, bad old Glamorgan for that hit of local sporting despair. Plus I'm a Jacksonville Jaguars fan, so I also support shit teams from afar.

Where was I? Yes, despite not following the Bluebirds, Cardiff City - The Movie still resonates. Especially the stuff on the cultural hegemony of rugby here. It's that good a film. It's honest and poetic, without being wanky.

And it also has a proper soundtrack, kicking off with I Want You by Inspiral Carpets featuring Mark E. Smith of The Fall.

Also, how long ago does 2008 look and feel?

Nine more songs for Lockdown 3's endless times.

Time Zone - World Destruction

No doubt he's an insufferable prick now, but I still find something compelling in John Lydon's hectoring vocals. Add in some classic Afrika Bambaataa and some German dudes and you're on to a winner.

Shanghai Au Go Go - I Cried All Winter

Same TBH. Still, this is some stellar coldwave from 1982.

SOPHIE - Ponyboy

I have to say, this may well be my favourite song about pegging. RIP SOPHIE.

Vanity 6 - Make-Up

Prince invented electroclash in 1982. Here's the proof.

Madlib - Dirtknock

Madlib, arranged by Four Tet, sampling Cardiff's Young Marble Giants? Was always gonna make it into a post on yerr.

Quinn - ok im cool

This is what I imagine all the kids listen to. All of them. Every single one of Gen Z. I don't usually go in for mumble rap or whatever this is called (pipe down grandad), but there's something in the skittish drums and meandering bass here.

The Doobie Brothers - It Keeps You Runnin'

I'm struggling to think of a band with a more naff name. Ditto, the intro to this song. But boy does it kick on. Michael McDonald's vocals, man.

The Roches - Hammond Song

Talking of vocals, the voices here and this song is like transcendental. Purity in sound.

New Order - Regret (Sabres Slow 'N' Low Mix)

Fail we may, sail we must.

Django Django Buzz Buzz

It sounds like a Django Django album. And that's OK with me. Opener Spirals is the highlight of the album.

The MGMT remix of Spirals (not on the album) is also quite fun.
