Amazed I've not posted about Making Plans For Nigel before, big uni vibes, big Shades vibes (which is now an office or centre of a mental health charity). I just clocked that the closed captions on YouTube describe the intro as funky punk music. You can't argue with that. 

Cerrone - Supernature

I've never desired a drum kit before like the clear-coloured plastic one in the video, aside from Young Marble Giants' electronic set-up - Yamaha? 

This is off that TK Maxx Christmas Ad innit. Retro-futuristic electronic disco music from 1977, hook it to me.

Pete Rock & CL Smooth - They Reminisce Over You (T.R.O.Y.)

Is this golden-era hip-hop? Absolutely slaps regardless.

Stereolab - Ping Pong

Think I say this every time Stereolab is mentioned here, but I really should get into Stereolab. Think I'd have a great time. 

Actually, just did a quick search, and this is only the third post that's tagged Stereolab. Look it's early.

Masashi Hamauzu - Besaid

Think Flo on the NTS Breakfast Show said this was off a Final Fantasy OST? Pretty chill with some lovely strings, though there are these little details which sound like the EarthBound soundtrack, like the chug/stutter drums whatever they are. And sounding like the EarthBound OST is no bad thing.

Tom Trago - A Shine Through

Not much to add here apart from that this is a right spaced-out groove.

Bicep - Water (feat. Clara La San)

It's easy to mock Bicep.

It's the trebly video game synth line that kicks in after 3:30 for me. Two bloke techno will never die.

Still bangs. Will always bang. LFO forever.

Weird how your reaction to pop music changes over time, especially the stuff that came out when you're a teenager. I properly fist pumped to ATB's 9pm (Till I Come) in the drive down to Cornwall the other day and now here I am posting a lo-fi indie cover of Alice Deejay's Better Off Alone. I couldn't stand either track at the time but here we are.

Live, Laugh, Amser Electroneg

Oh hi Mark.

Yeah, as indicated by the lack of posting on here and on the socials, I jacked in the radio show.

I left it a little vague in my tweet back in August, but I should really say it was entirely my decision to stop doing Amser Electroneg. I'd just had enough. It sounds daft when it's only selecting ten or so tracks a week - with at last three from Wales obvs - but it took two to three evenings a week putting an hour's show together. It was becoming a chore.

Plus, and I'm going to sound ancient here, it wasn't like back in my student days on Radiowave (which is now Surf Radio). Then it was rock up with some CD-Rs, stick 'em in those awful Denon DJ CD players and do it live. With Amser Electroneg, it was recording links between tracks I'd already uploaded to Myriad at home... and it just wasn't as fun.

Now, this reads like I'm a right Debbie Downer, and I have been struggling recently, but I am very grateful to Ben Dain-Smith and Bro Radio for the opportunity. Doing the show really did make me go digging, I bought more off Bandcamp than I've done in years and got me listening to more local stuff than ever before. And there's some great electronic music being made in South Wales, stuff like Umbromaniii, Pope John Paul Van Damme, and Tom Algorithm.

And one artist I'd really like to shoutout is Ryhs, who's now getting BBC Radio airplay. Top productions from Cardiff like and you can get his latest track for free over on Bandcamp...

Anyway, the door may be open to do more shows at Bro, but I'm thinking I may bring AE back as a MixCloud thing, maybe monthly and just electronic music from Wales. Maybe. I've got a mic and Audacity on an old laptop somewhere. New Year's Resolution? Maybe.

While it was tempting to do a yacht-rock special for April Fool's Day, Amser Electroneg 014 went out as normal, with prime electronic music from Wales and around the world.

So when I saw Hit Parade 1 in a charity shop here in Llantwit for 20p, it was a gamble worth taking. And it paid off with this grungey, dirgey take on Julee Cruise's Falling from the Twin Peaks OST.

I'm pretty sure I'm not going to be back on Bro Radio this Friday as I'm still unwell and testing positive for COVID-19. Not sure what they'll bang on in my absence, but why not take this opportunity to catch up on all the previous Amser Electroneg shows (apart from AE 003, shameful, shameful 003).

Being down with the sickness means I'm probably going to miss Wales v Austria, which fucking sucks. Just thought I'd share that.

Just a couple of mixes I've been enjoying recently

In a wild break from the norm, here's a post that's not about my radio show, an album review I've written for Buzz Magazine, or a narrativeless YouTube Playlist.

Instead, here are three mixes I've been enjoying over the past couple of weeks.

Lugg & Potter 1987 Mix

Dwi'n wedi gwrando i'r mix 'na, pryd dwi'n wedi fynd ymweld i Weston-super-Mare... that's not right, is it? I'm trying to say that I listened to this mix when I went to Weston-super-Mare. 

First played on Huw Stephens' show on BBC Radio Cymru on 24 February 2022, it was made "in celebration of the rerelease of Traddodiad Ofnus' Welsh Tourist Bored album, [and is] a selection of music from the period that inspired us..."

Two main things I took from Lugg & Potter 1987 Mix:

1. I learned where the vocal sample for Lennie De Ice's rave classic We Are i.e comes from (Chaba Fadela - N'sel fik).

2. Like with Brodyr y Ffin - Dal i Freuddwydio recently, if someone can hook me up with an mp3 of Ffenestri - Oes y Cyfrifiaduron to play on Amser Electroneg that would be boss.

Bleep Mix #229 - The Gaslamp Killer: Broadcast Special

Warp released/re-released a couple of hard-to-find Broadcast albums this week. So for the latest Bleep Mix, they got The Gaslamp Killer to stitch together some rarer Broadcast tracks. Well hauntological.

Steve Reich In The Afternoon 18: Ukraine Electronic

Can I just take a moment to applaud that title? Lovely stuff. Anyway, Welsh techno don Ffrancon presents "Five tracks of electronic music from Ukraine, found on Bandcamp." Again, lovely stuff.

Roughion's Dydd Miwsig Cymru History of Welsh Dance Music Mix

Right, you know in my last post, where I said I was after Y Brodyr y Ffin - Dal i Freuddwydio (Cymysgiad Estinedig), but I couldn't find it? Well...

I still can't find it.

The closest I've come is this top mix from Roughion, made for Mon FM last year to celebrate Dydd Miwsyg Cymru / Welsh Language Music Day. And I'm delighted to learn that yacht rock reached Wales too... coracle rock?

James Pants tweeted "You guys want to hear a really good song?" a couple of weeks ago and a link to this song. The Creep Zone dude wasn't wrong. The synths sound like crystals on this lost 80s pop banger.

Y Brodyr y Ffin - Dal i Freuddwydio (Cymysgiad Estinedig)

Started listening to Rhys Mwyn on BBC Radio Cymru for an in on Welsh-language music for Amser Electroneg. He dropped this a couple of weeks ago and I can't find a way to get the mp3 legally, so it's going here. A stonking, sprawling, weird slice of electronic new wave pop from 1986.

The Power Station - Some Like It Hot

One of the many CDs I kept from my Dad's collection was Robert Palmer's greatest hits. I had no idea what or who The Power Station were - "It was made up of singer Robert Palmer, former Chic drummer Tony Thompson, and Duran Duran members John Taylor (bass) and Andy Taylor (guitar)." 

Powerful stuff. I promise you there is stuff from this century in this playlist.

Not yet though. Erection is lewd, taut post-punk / new wave from 1981.

The Vanishing - Lovesick

Right, here we go. Erol Alkan did a Trash special last month on his NTS show and this honking, propulsive post-punk-revival stomper from 2004 was one of many highlights. And I mean honking, if you're not a sax man then avoid. I'm not big on sax, but it works yerr.

Top 10 Things I Heard in 2021

Here are the ten best things I heard in 2021. 

As with previous editions, this list is not the best stuff released this year, but my favourite music I heard for the first time in 2021. There's like, two tracks from last year, most are from the 80s.
